Overview

The primary therapeutic role of ORS solutions is in prevention and treatment of dehydration may cause by diarrhea and vomiting. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) are a mixture of electrolytes (salts), and carbohydrates (in the form of sugar), which are dissolved in water. They are used to replace salts and water that the body loses when you have dehydration caused by gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, or vomiting.

Indications

  • Diarrhoea
  • Dehydration

About Composition

Potassium: Human body contains 60% of water and out of which 40% of is Intracellular fluid and 60% is Extracellular fluid. Potassium is the major ion of intracellular fluid and help in maintaining the hydration of cell. Potassium is also important for nerve conduction as it moment around the membrane helps in changing the voltage and creates an impulse. It also helps in muscle contraction.
Sodium: Sodium is very important component of extracellular fluid and has numerous functions which includes nerve conduction, muscle contraction, cardiac functioning. It also helps in regulating the blood volume to about 5 liters approximately.
Calcium: It is very important mineral required for the body growth. Calcium has numerous use in the body which include providing structure to the body by forming bones, major component of teeth’s, important ion for skeletal muscle and cardiac contraction. Calcium also stimulates release of neurotransmitters, hormones and other secretions inside the body. It also helps in maintaining blood pressure.
Magnesium: Magnesium plays an important role in relaying signals between your brain and body. Magnesium is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions occurring in the body. It regulates normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady, and helps bones remain strong. It also helps adjust blood glucose levels. It is also involved energy production and protein synthesis.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an important component for collagen biosynthesis. Vitamin C is also involved in protein metabolism.  Vitamin C exhibits antioxidant properties and has been shown to regenerate other antioxidants within the body, including alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E). Vitamin C has also shown to increase the absorption of calcium. Dextrose: It is also known D-glucose which is a monosaccharide considered as the simplest form of sugar. It is the simplest source of energy in cell function, and the regulation of its metabolism is of great importance. During the dehydrated condition, body is deprived of energy which is fulfilled by glucose and helps in maintain the normal functioning of the body.
